Infant Car Seat

Designed for approximately the first six to nine months, the highlight of infant car seats is their portability – due to their detachable base. This means that you can get sleeping babies in and out of the car without waking them. Car seats like the Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix can also be attached to major stroller brands like Bugaboo, Stokke, Baby Jogger, etc.

Toddler Seats

This is the car seat you'll need for children around six months to four years of age, or for those that weigh 40 pounds. It is highly recommended to keep car seats rear facing until your baby reaches two years of age. After that, these car seats can be installed facing forward. Since toddler car seats rarely make it into the house, you only have to worry about whether it will fit in your car. Before you make a purchase, it is advised to try it out in your backseat, especially if you're going to have more than one car seat.

Booster Seat

The booster seat is for bigger kids. They get to use the car's seat belt system just like adults – the booster seat just provides a little extra protection and a bit of a height boost. Make sure your booster seat includes seat-belt adjusters. This will help you avoid the unnecessary frustration of twisted or tangled seat belts and ensure that the seat belt is at the right position for your child's changing height.

What you should look for in a good car seat:

Good safety rating
Every seat on the market meets the minimum safety standards, but you'll want the safest car seat you can find, especially if you have an older car. Generally, higher-priced models are more expensive because of their extra attention to safety features like head cushioning and side-impact protection.

Easiest installation
If your car is LATCH-equipped, you won't have to worry as much about proper installation. However, if your car seat isn't LATCH-equipped, you should at least make sure that it's reasonably easy to install with confidence. It is important to note that proper installation is the key to a safe car seat.

Five-point harness
This harness secures your child in place at the shoulders, hips, and between the legs for maximum security and is a standard feature in every car seat.

Front harness adjusters
Adjusting a harness in the back is like doing it with your eyes closed, so ensure you are able to adjust it from the front, especially considering you'll have to do it every time you put your baby in the car.

Removable/washable fabric and pads
Your car seat is definitely going to get dirty, so look for removable and washable pads and upholstery.
